What does that mean???

If you are new to the SCA, sometimes it can seem like we are speaking a different language. For new people and experienced members alike, this is the reference page for when you are at a loss. Hopefully this page contains all the confusing words you've been pondering over, and answer's most of your questions. Most of the offices' descriptions loosely came from "A New Members' Guide to the Socitey for Creative Anachronism" © 2000 The Society for Creative Anachronism, Inc. Information on this page will be updated as soon as it becomes available.

Common SCA Words and Phrases

Hold - Hold is a very important term used during combat, usually by the Marshall(s), meaning FREEZE! It is used for safety, whether it's someone standing too close to the fighting, or someone has had an armor malfunction, it means freeze right now, something needs to be done.

Oyez - Oyez (pronounced O-Ye) is a very common SCA phrase, meaning Attention! It is mostly used by the Herald(s) to get everyone's attention for announcements, or during a large loud gathering, like Court or Feast, to quiet everyone and point attention to something.

SCAdian - Just like being "Roman" if you live in or something came from Rome, this term replies to anything that is part of the SCA. We use the term instead of "for the SCA" or "in the SCA". Example: "Do you have a SCAdian name yet?" is a bit shorter than "Do you have a name for SCA use yet?"
