Siege Weapons
Siege Engine rules for Border Raids XXXIII
All Siege Engines will be expected to follow the SCA Siege Engine rules. All Siege Engines will authorize before they are allowed to participate in combat. No exceptions will be allowed.
Rules for all Siege Engines:
• Both the shaft and combat head of 48" ballista Javelins must be completely covered with yellow tape, and 4-tennis ball ammunition shall be at least 50% covered by yellow tape. These munitions may kill through shields but will not damage structures. Small arms munitions may be fired from siege engines but will only be counted as combat archery for damage purposes, and may not be marked with yellow tape.
• All engines (except man-powered engines) must have a mechanical cocking device, such as a winch or windlass. No engine will be cocked by hand.
• Man-powered machines will be considered small (Type B) engines and must meet the minimum and maximum firing requirements. Man-powered engines are not required to have a mechanical release or cocking device. These engines must use Type B ammo. One pound rocks are not allowed on these engines.
• All siege equipment (engines, towers, ramps) and ammo must have the owners name and home group or kingdom written on it. If we find ammo without this information, the owner of the engine will be sent to Marshal's court.
• Minimum firing range for any siege engine is 30 feet. Maximum range of any siege engine is 80 yards.
• No gleaning of spent ammunition is allowed by siege engine crews.
• All Siege Engines will be locked and non-functioning in some manner while not in use and off the battlefield. Further, all ammunition shall be locked down or secured in some manner while not on the battlefield. There is no exception to this rule, which is designed to keep small children from playing on them and possibly being seriously injured.
• The battlefield may not be marked for placement of siege engines. Nor can the distance be paced off. All Siege Engines will be placed into position for the first time just before the battles begin.
Large Engine (Type A) – has a footprint of 18 square feet, fires large siege ammo (1 lb rock) at least 40 yards and no more than 80 yards, and is manned by a crew of 3. The minimum crew compliment is defined regardless of actual operational requirements. The three crewmembers must be dedicated to the weapon and cannot participate in other activities while the weapon is active.
Small Engine (Type B) – has a footprint of at least 12 square feet and fires it ammo at least 40 yards and no more than 80 yards, and is manned by a crew of 2.
