Grand Equestrian Tournament of Chivalric Love
Riders are requested to dress themselves and their mounts as befits nobles of mid to late Medieval/Renaissance Western Europe. Some loaner barding is available, please contact Lady Peryn.
Four noble ladies will stand as Judges for the Tournament and care should be taken to present your best image to impress the ladies of the Berfois. Please bedeck yourself and your horse in your heraldic colors and place your banner on the edge of the field so all may easily know you are competing.
The Judges, at their pleasure, will gift their favorites for heraldic display, most Chivalric and inspired riding/marshallate skill, and best overall score.

You may use one of the following methods to contain your horse:
Picket line/high tie
Tied to trailer
Inside trailer (if there is enough room to be comfortable)
Electrical fencing - bring warning tags
Portable panels
Contact Lady Peryn if you need to use something else.
Horses and horse owners are required to camp in the equestrian area.
Please do not take a horse outside of the equestrian area without special arrangement with the EMIC (Lady Peryn).
Field side shade pavilions are highly encouraged. Please bring them if you have them.
Authorizations
Offered only to those competing in equestrian on Saturday, prior arrangement required.
An additional special authorization will be required for participation in the mounted combat melee scenario.
Minors
Anyone under the age of 18 MUST be accompanied by an ADULT to enter the equestrian area.
Minors found without supervision will be reported to their parents the first time, the Constable the second. This is a safety issue, your cooperation helps to keep your kids safe.
Children 12 and older, and those escorted by teens according to Meridian law, may watch activities from the populace viewing area without an adult, provided they do not enter the arena or camping/stabling area and do not approach the horses.
Minors are welcome to compete with the adults, provided they make prior arrangements for a horse, complete an authorization that day, have a legal guardian with them while with the horses, and follow Society Equestrian rules.
Ground crew
Help needed! Adults and children 10 and older (with parent) can help in several areas:
Resetting games
Handing weapons to riders (adults only)
Refilling jousting tips on lances

Runners
Ground crew that will be working on the field with horses are required to attend a safety class - contact Lady Peryn.
Marshals
Please contact Lady Peryn if you are an equestrian marshal and plan to help with EQ activities at the event.
Mounted Combat
This activity is limited to intermediate and advanced adult riders. Stallions and those horses known to bite/kick other horses are not permitted for this activity. A special authorization is required beyond the normal rider authorization process.
Please read and follow the Society Equestrian Rules for mounted combat:
http://www.sca.org/officers/marshal/combat/equestrian
Some loaner equipment may be available, please bring your own if you have it.
Torse & mantling are highly encouraged.
NOTE:
The Mounted Combat Melee scenario - Defense/Siege of the Tower of Chivalric Love - requires a brief, but necessary, authorization of horse and rider. Riders should already be authorized for regular mounted combat.
The scenario involves a single lady in a short tower with a limited number of white beanbags which she is allowed to throw at rider’s crests. She may only aim at riders who are not currently engaged in combat with another rider. Crests should be attached so that they dislodge with a moderate blow from a beanbag or sword.
A brief authorization will be offered before the start of the Melee where each horse/rider in turn (the rider with helm, crest, and sword) will be targeted for several blows from a Lady in the tower. Horses may startle but must not move more than a couple feet and the rider must immediately bring them under control. Please desensitize your horse BEFORE the event.
Riders are reminded to control their swings. Excessive force and/or hitting a horse on the head will receive one warning. A second incident may cause the rider to be dismissed from the melee. Marshals have full discretion.
Jousting This activity requires a special authorization and specialized equipment. Horses must also be trained for this activity.
Please see SCA Jousting rules:
Jousting_Rules.htm
Scoring:
1 pt - touch but no break
2 pts - a simple break of the foam tip
3 pts - multiple breaks of the foam tip
Aiming for the head is not allowed. Couching or bracing of the lance under the arm is not allowed. Equipment will be inspected on site.
Heraldry - banners, surcotes, torse/mantling, etc.
Heraldic banner/standard/gonfalon
Either has your arms/device or badge.

A heraldic surcote or other heraldic clothing
Colors should match your torse/mantling & barding. Tabards are open on the sides and are used for heralds - don’t use a tabard. Surcotes, doublets, cotehardies, clothing with sides are what riders would wear to tourney.
